Description of Colostomy

A colostomy consists of an artificial opening (stoma) created in the large intestine and brought to the surface of the abdomen for the purpose of evacuating the bowels.

The aim of colostomy is to restore the outflow of feces from a location in the intestine above an area that is healing or which has been surgically removed.
